Escribe mi lector Manuel Gómez:

Estimado Sr. Espada:

First lie: Catalonia was never independent. It was a county of the Crown of Aragon and then of Spain.

Second lie: It is inaccurate to say that "Catalonia backed the losing side" in the Spanish civil war. As in many other parts of Spain, there were those in Catalonia that opposed Franco, but also many others that supported him during the war and then during his dictatorship (including Salvador Dalí, for example), and consequently profited from their support during Franco's regime.

Third lie: Franco did not suppress the autonomy of Catalonia, but all regional autonomies. There is nothing exceptional here that distinguishes Catalonia from the rest of Spain.

Fourth lie:The difference between what Catalonia contributes and what it receives from the central State is not 12 billion euros, but 3 billion; it is not Catalonia that contributes, but the Catalans; this happens in all countries in the world: the richest pay more taxes than the poorest and that cannot be an argument for independence.

Fifth lie: There was no "formal" independence referendum in Catalonia. There were absolutely no controls and no way to verify how many people participated. There are many accounts, even YouTube videos, of people voting multiple times in different polling stations. There are also videos online that show volunteers bringing ballot boxes full of pro-independence ballots into the polling stations before they even opened. There was nothing "formal" about the process.

Sixth lie: What the police did on October 1st was not a repressive action, but of compliance with resolutions issued by independent judges, who ordered to prevent the holding of the referendum.

Seventh lie: The crimes of the separatist leaders were not committed against Spain, but against the Criminal Code and the Constitution.
....
